Regional Orientation is offered in a classroom setting, building on the basic information provided in Regional Orientation Online. The purpose of Regional Orientation is to provide all new hires with the “need to know” information (eg. specific Accreditation-related practices, etc.) that is required to prepare new employees for their job in the workplace setting. 3 hours to 3 days commitment depending on your position.
Regional Orientation is for all new VCH employees, this includes:
- All new hires (please note, students are not eligible to attend)
- Any VCH employee who has been away from work for greater than 18 months
- Any VCH employee who is changing positions and requires specific sessions applicable to their new role (e.g. moving from a non-clinical role to a clinical role OR from student nurse to registered nurse)
Regional Orientation takes place at each site (VGH, RH and LGH) monthly. For information regarding yearly dates and the day-to-day content please review the documents below:

Orientation Structure and Curriculum
Regional Orientation offers classroom based learning spread over 3 hours or 5 days, depending on the employee’s position. Sessions cover a broad variety of topics from welcoming employees to VCH and introducing the resources available to them, to reviewing workplace safety methods to reviewing clinical techniques and clinical response processes. Employees should attend the sessions required by their position as discerned by their manager, educator or hiring delegate.
For Educators: Curriculum Overview
For a detailed outline of the Regional Orientation sessions, the learning intentions and the content covered, we encourage educators and other facilitators to visit the Regional Orientation page on the For Educators Only (FEO) Sharepoint. This site contains a summary of the content covered during orientation and also houses the documents used by facilitators to run sessions. This site is only accessible from computers at VCH sites:
Curriculum Review Committee
The VCH Orientation program has a standing Curriculum Review Committee to support the integrity of the program so that the curriculum is aligned with Accreditation Canada standards, BC Ministry of Health priorities, and the People First values set out by Vancouver Coastal Health and is implemented according to learner-centred educational principles.
One function of this committee is to review and respond to requests for new content to be added to curriculum. If you have proposed new or revised content for VCH Orientation (either online or classroom), please complete this form (VCH Regional Orientation Request Form 2018) and submit to: VCHOrientation@vch.ca
